You're on Maui. Sunrise is sold out for the rest of your trip. Here's the exact playbook, working backwards from your target morning.
T–3 days: set the trap
- Set up alerts now. Cancellations reappear at random from this point forward, and the last 48–72 hours are when travel plans break most. Haleakalā Sunrise Alerts (free email watch, or $19 SMS at up to 10 checks/hour) pings you when your date reopens — you book the $1 pass yourself on recreation.gov.
- Prep your recreation.gov account tonight: logged in, payment saved. Reopened slots live for minutes; checkout fumbling loses them.
T–2 days, 7:00 a.m. HST sharp: the drop
The park releases its held-back batch of passes at exactly 7:00 a.m. Hawaii time, two days before each sunrise date. This is the one scheduled restock:
- Load the Haleakalā page on recreation.gov at 6:50 a.m.
- Refresh at 7:00:00 — and again over the next few minutes if nothing shows
- Complete checkout immediately; a cart hold isn't a booking
You're on island time already, so no timezone math — just wake up for it.
T–1 day: the cancellation window peaks
No drop today, but this is prime cancellation churn — tomorrow's no-shows are canceling now. Keep alerts running; if a text comes, book within minutes.
Parallel move: check sunrise tour availability for your date. Tours don't use the 150 vehicle slots and often have last-minute seats. Decide your walk-away price now (~$150–$250/person) so you're not deliberating at 9 p.m.
The morning of, until 7:00 a.m.
Believe it or not, the pool stays live until 7:00 a.m. on the day itself. A 4 a.m. cancellation can still be booked and used by someone already awake and dressed. If you're a genuine diehard: wake at 3:30, check, and be ready to drive.
If nothing opens
- Sunset tonight instead — no reservation, no alarm, same cloud sea, plus stargazing
- Enter after 7:00 a.m. — full daylight crater, thinner crowds, the best hiking
- Tour — the guaranteed path if a summit sunrise is non-negotiable
